International Journal of Drug Policy: Telemedicine to Improve Access to Medications for Opioid Use Disorder in Illinois, 2022-2024
Telemedicine prescribing of buprenorphine is an effective model for the initiation of medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD). Since the launch of the MAR NOW helpline in Illinois, 2649 callers seeking assistance with substance use disorder have accessed the helpline. The MAR NOW helpline connected 1698 callers to treatment for opioid use disorder. Findings suggest a state-wide low-barrier access to medications by telemedicine program is an effective treatment model for the initiation of medications for opioid use disorder.
