JMIR Publications: Patient and Clinician Perspectives on the Effectiveness of Current Telemedicine Approaches in Endocrinology Care for Type 2 Diabetes

This qualitative study aimed to evaluate clinician and patient perspectives on the benefits and limitations of telemedicine care delivery for type 2 diabetes and views on ways to enhance telemedicine effectiveness type 2 diabetes patients. Both clinicians and patients said telemedicine allowed patients to overcome physical (i.e., geographic and transportation) and scheduling (i.e., work commitments and wait times) barriers to specialty care for type 2 diabetes. Researchers also concluded that telemedicine may enhance communication involving diabetes care by improving information sharing between patients and clinicians. Clinicians and patients identified pre-visit preparation, the involvement of multidisciplinary providers, and frequent brief check-ins as potential strategies to improve the quality of telemedicine care for adults with type 2 diabetes.
