JAMA Network: Role and Limitations of Telemedicine in Addressing Specialty Care Access Disparities—From Promise to Practice

This study examined the geographic and sociodemographic factors associated with endocrinology and cardiology specialty care receipt among adults with type 2 diabetes (T2D) and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). In this invited commentary, Ilana Graetz, from Emory University, shared builds on the findings, indicating that enhanced collaboration between primary care and specialists—through teleconsultations, shared care models, or hybrid approaches—could improve patient outcomes without requiring additional in-person specialist visits. Future research should investigate how specialty care influences guideline-concordant treatment use and health outcomes, such as hemoglobin A1c control and reductions in cardiovascular events, with stratification by disease complexity and control levels.
